Product description
The ZORIA-001 selective supplement lets you cultivate yeasts and filamentous fungi while limiting the growth of accompanying bacterial flora — with no chloramphenicol, ampicillin or any other antibiotic. Classic selective media rely on antibiotics, which are costly, unstable in solution, require special waste handling and impose selective pressure that favours the rise of resistance. Chloramphenicol is a special case here — its toxicity and trade restrictions drive many researchers to look for an alternative.
The active substance of ZORIA-001 is ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in a proprietary composition with magnesium ions, covered by patent application P.454716. The action is bacteriostatic and not antibiotic-based — so it generates no pressure toward resistance and lets you work with species sensitive to classic antimicrobial agents.
In our own studies (OD₆₀₀ growth kinetics) ZORIA-001 kept Candida albicans yeast growing to a full plateau while inhibiting the growth of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria — Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Bacillus cereus. In a mixed culture (bacteria + yeast) the observed growth came almost exclusively from the yeast.
ZORIA-001 contains no calcium salts, making it compatible with phosphate-buffered media (TSB, LB) as well as Sabouraud-type mycological media. Compatible with liquid, semi-solid and solid agar media. For research use only (RUO).

Preparation
- Dissolve the sachet contents in 100 ml of distilled or molecular-biology-grade water.
- Filter the solution through a 0.22 µm filter.
- Add to 900 ml of target medium at a temperature below 60 °C.

Technical notes
- The active substance is heat-labile. Do not autoclave, boil or microwave solutions containing the additive. Add the working solution only to media cooled below 60 °C.
- The active substance is sensitive to light and oxygen. Store solutions protected from light, in containers filled as close to the cap as possible — the headspace air volume is the main factor accelerating degradation.
- A colour change to orange or brown indicates degradation of the active substance. Medium with a discoloured additive should be discarded.
- For spectrophotometric measurements, run a dynamic blank for each condition, due to possible absorbance drift from the formation of coloured degradation products.
- The additive is compatible with semi-solid and solid agar-containing media.
- The additive can cause the drop in pH by 1-2 units.
Safety note
The active substance is not classified as hazardous under the CLP Regulation and is widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries.
- Ingestion: rinse the mouth with water.
- Eye contact: flush with plenty of water or saline.
- Skin contact: the working solution has a low pH and may irritate mucous membranes and damaged or inflamed skin. Healthy skin — rinse with water.
